Tool Box

Ready for a mobile cash register? Square, an application that can be downloaded to an iPad, iPhone or Andriod device, is just that. It accepts credit card payments anywhere—without the heavy technology.
Established by glass artist Jim McKelvey and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, the seller either types in the credit card number or swipes it via a headphone-jack card reader, and the customer signs the screen and receives an electronic receipt.
“With Square the goal is to get people in immediately, and make the transaction as smooth as possible,” Dorsey explains. Better yet, there’s no contract, set up fee, monthly fee or minimum, only a fee for each card swiped. To learn more, click here.

While Square certainly sounds great, upon more careful review of the comments by users and a discussion with the owner of Teamac this morning, the card reader they provide is very difficult to use and the latest info on Square’s site from the CEO indicates that this was perhaps launched prematurely. Read the latest reviews in the iTunes store for this ap and to see how well the swipe appliance does/doesn’t work, here’s a link to a video on YouTube I was sent by Teamac:

It’s not quite ready for prime time yet from user reviews/comments. Plus there are issues with how much you can charge PER transaction AND per WEEK initially.
Great concept, maybe they’ll get the bugs worked out eventually.
